SMALL GROUPS

There are a variety of small groups at Burbank First! Meet up with friendly and like-minded people who share your hobbies and interests. We're excited to continue growing our community!

Come join Pastor Alex for a Bible study as we dig deeper into the first chapters of the book of Acts. We will get a glimpse of the joys and triumphs of the early church and will make connections to the book of Luke. All you need is a Bible and a little time as we practice the study of scripture, and reveal new questions to ponder. This group will meet on Thursdays from 12:30 to 2:00 PM in Stamper Lounge. For more information, please contact Pastor Alex Powell at apowell@bfumc.net.

Kim Smith is hosting another book study small group in Stamper Lounge! They will start meeting this Tuesday, September 9, from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. The group will be discussing the book “Unafraid: Living with Courage and Hope in Uncertain Times” by Reverend Adam Hamilton. Books are available in Amy Beth's office for only $14.00! Homework before the first meeting on September 9 will be reading Part 1 (chapters 1 through 4)! If you have any questions, please email Kim Smith at riverdts3@gmail.com.

What does it mean to be a Christian today? This group is a safe place for open-minded discussion about where we are currently as a United Methodist church and individuals in regards to our Christianity. Pastor Alex’s message on Sundays will serve as a starting place for the meeting, as well as a space to express the joys and concerns of those in attendance. Additionally, our mission as a local church is to serve our Burbank neighbors and build bridges to better serve those in our community. This group will meet at 10:45 AM in Stamper Lounge after every Sunday morning worship. September 28th will be the first meeting date! For more information, please contact Tim Wells at twwells@sbcglobal.net.

Singers wanted for the choir! If you like to perform, we would love to add your talents to our Chancel Choir! Feel free to drop in on Chancel Choir practice every Thursday in our sanctuary at 7:00 PM. For more information on the Chancel Choir, chat with our music leader Manu or email him at chancelchoir@burbankfirstumc.org.

Dance For Joy is a dance fitness class that combines all types of music with easy-to-follow dance moves. It is a fun and energetic way to get a workout in with some great company. Since this is a specialty dance class with a trained dance instructor, there is a small fee of $5 a class or $45 upfront for all 11 sessions. Classes will be on Tuesdays at 7:15 PM in the upstairs dance studio at Burbank First UMC. The first class is on September 16! For more information, please contact Heather Vasquez at urheather16@hotmail.com.

With the mobile game Pokémon GO! as a common interest, let's rise up against isolation and mindfully deal with our struggles in togetherness. You will learn how games like this can connect you to friends, family, and strangers alike. Sometimes, we will do other activities, like short walks and maybe even a paint night. Bring a friend or (grand)parent! Finger foods will be provided. Please note that inclusivity is important to this small group, so every age and creed is welcome. This group will meet on Tuesdays from 6:45 to 8:00 PM at two different locations: 9/9, 9/23, 10/7, 10/21, 11/4 at the courtyard outside Trever Hall, and 9/16, 9/30, 10/14, 10/28, 11/11 at McCambridge Park. After November 11, meetings will be moved to Wednesdays. For more information, please contact Rit Lu at rithylu@hotmail.com!

Meetings are Tuesdays at 7:30 AM in the courtyard! The Renovators meet Tuesday mornings for a bit of work, donuts, and conversation. This group does the valuable work of fixing things around the church. If you are handy or just like helping with projects, please come join us! For more information, please contact Mike Everhart at everhartmike@yahoo.com.

Meetings are the first Thursday of each month from 10:00 to 11:15 AM in Stamper Lounge! The group's mission is to raise awareness of less fortunate women, children, and youth of the world, here and abroad. Meetings are opened in prayer and members contemplate "what is our purpose?" This group keeps meetings enjoyable while also discussing serious subjects. Any new members are welcomed with open arms and hearts. There is a pledge amount to the organization of United Women of Faith.

This group meets about once a month on Saturday mornings (7:30 AM) or Saturday/Sunday afternoons (1:30 PM) depending on the heat and the weather. We choose various local hiking and walking spots in and around Burbank to enjoy some fresh air, movement, and fellowship together for around an hour. Some of our favorite locations are Griffith Park, Lake Hollywood, Stough Canyon, and Wildwood Canyon. All ages are welcome! We notify our members about the length and difficulty level of the hike/walk before going. For more information, please contact Fran Wells at fwells@bfumc.net.

Do you enjoy working with your hands, crafting, or simply connecting with others? All adults are welcome to a monthly gathering where creativity meets community. Each session features a themed hands-on activity to help you unwind, followed by a time of sharing and prayer. To help us prepare materials, advanced sign-up is strongly encouraged -- but drop-ins are also welcome! Our first meetup will be on a Friday evening, although future dates may shift to best fit everyone’s schedule. If you're interested but unsure about timing, go ahead and sign up -- just let us know what days and times work best for you. This group will meet in the Youth Room for about an hour-and-a-half of fun and fellowship. The first meeting is on Friday, September 26, at 6:30 PM in the Youth room. For more information, please contact Phillis Wong at phillismail@gmail.com.

Meetings are Wednesdays at 10:00 AM online on Zoom! We gather prayer requests for our church family and to spend time in prayer. This is a vital support for many who are dealing with long-term illnesses, facing surgery, or having a rough time in life. You can add prayer requests by emailing them to prayer@burbankfirstumc.org.
